“Solar Consciousness”

Awakening to the Intelligence of Light

There is something about this time of year that feels deeply personal to me. Summer has always been my favorite season—the long days, warm evenings with fireflies, gardens in bloom, the smell of the air after a surprise summer rainstorm, and the unmistakable sense that life is overflowing with possibility.

It is also the time of year when we mark the longest day of the year. This year, the Summer Solstice arrived on what was probably the most beautiful day of the summer in the mid-Atlantic region. It surrounded me with a beautiful convergence of light, gratitude, and remembrance. I found myself reflecting on the many ways light shapes our lives—not only the sunlight that nourishes the Earth, but the inner light that guides our choices, illuminates our path, and helps us recognize what truly matters.

During the time of the solstices, the Earth generously tilts toward the sun. Days stretch long, gardens flourish, and life seems to hum with vitality. It is no wonder that many spiritual traditions have honored this season as a time of illumination. In yoga, we might call this awakening solar consciousness—an invitation to become more aware of where we place our attention and how we direct our energy.

The physical sun sustains nearly all life on Earth. Through photosynthesis, sunlight is transformed into nourishment, creating the foundation of our food systems and ecosystems. I know this is true because I see it each morning when I head out to my garden and see the changes in the peas, onions, tomatoes, and peppers that I planted there. The sunlight encourages their growth.

Scientists have also shown that sunlight plays a crucial role in regulating our circadian rhythms, influencing sleep, mood, and overall well-being. In many ways, light quite literally helps us come alive.

Blending Yoga and This Celestial Event

Yogic teachings offer a beautiful parallel. The Sanskrit word surya means "sun," and in yogic philosophy, the sun is often associated with clarity, vitality, and conscious awareness. Practices such as Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations) were developed not simply as physical exercise, but as a moving prayer—a way of honoring the life-giving energy that flows through and around us.

Yet solar consciousness is about more than the celestial body shining above us. It is also about the inner light of awareness.

What receives the light of our attention grows. The thoughts we revisit, the stories we repeat, the relationships we nurture, and the practices we return to all gather energy. Like a garden, our inner landscape flourishes according to where we direct our care.

The question this season offers is simple: What am I shining a light on? Where is my energy going? Am I giving my precious attention to fear and distraction, or to gratitude and possibility? Am I scattering my energy in many directions, or focusing it on what truly matters?

The sun does not strive to shine. It simply radiates its nature. Perhaps there is wisdom in that. As we move through these bright summer days, may we remember that our own light does not need to be earned. It only needs to be uncovered. I pray that you always allow your light to shine.

Solar Consciousness Yoga Practices

  • Step outside. Feel the warmth on your skin. Lift your face to the sky. Let the sun remind you of what yoga has taught all along: awareness is transformative, and where we place our attention becomes the life we create.

  • Eat dinner outside to honor this longest day of the year. We all know that food tastes better outside anyway.

  • Watch the sunset. See this as a gift wrapped in the colors of lavender, pink, orange, and gold. A masterpiece that has been painted just for you.

  • Light a candle as the sun disappears to mark the promise of its return tomorrow and to keep the light of the season burning brightly in your heart.

One Last Thing Before I Go…

Just remember…energy flows where your focus goes. Shine your light on the good stuff!

 Until next time.
